Vehicle Free Days In Cades Cove
Cades Cove Loop Road is motor vehicle-free all day on Wednesdays starting May 6, 2026 and lasting through September 30, 2026. During this time, the 11-mile loop is reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists from sunrise to sunset. Standard bikes are permitted, as well as, Class 1 e-bikes, and Class 2 e-bikes. Bike rentals are also available at the Cades Cove Campground Store on a first-come, first-served basis. Rentals typically cost between $10-$15 per hour and include a helmet.
A valid Great Smoky Mountains Parking Tag is required for any vehicle parked for more than 15 minutes. The cost of the daily tag is $5. Parking lots do fill up quickly during the morning hours. To avoid being turned away when lots reach capacity, many recommend arriving in the afternoon. All vehicles must be parked in designated spots (Cades Cove Picnic Area or the loop entrance) to protect the roadside ecosystem.
The loop is 11 miles and contains several steep hills. Short cuts can be made at Sparks Lane (making a 4-mile loop) or Hyatt Lane (making an 8-mile loop). Since there is no reliable cell signal in Cades Cove, please download maps or guides from the National Park App before you arrive.
Always remember safety first. Helmets are strongly recommended for everyone and are legally required for children under 16. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no food or water stations along the loop road itself.
